Pianomania follows Stefan Knüpfer, Steinway & Sons’ Master Tuner in Vienna, as he works with some of the world’s best known concert pianists, including Lang Lang, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Alfred Brendel. Warm, and at times gently humorous, the film reveals how unsung hero Knüpfer is pivotal to realising the vision of each virtuoso, showing us the art, the science and the passion behind the search for perfection.
This prize-winning film by Lilian Franck and Robert Cibis has played Toronto, London, Glasgow, Dublin, SXSW, IDFA and Sheffield film festivals to great acclaim. It offers a behind the scenes insight into the world of the concert pianist and the piano tuner, with fascinating rehearsal and music recording footage cameras are rarely allowed to capture. Pianomania launched in the UK on 1 August at the Curzon Mayfair cinema, which included a special Q&A Event. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, internationally renowned pianist, and Robert Cibis, the director of Pianomania, discussed the relationship between the concert pianist and the piano tuner, and how the story was brought to the screen, with Erica Worth, Editor of Pianist Magazine.
